CCPS Utilizes Grant Funds For New Shoes for Students

With pandemic relief funds coming to an end on September 30, 2024, school divisions have been given opportunities to apply for reallocations from unspent funds from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund to meet student needs.  Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS) has taken full advantage of this opportunity by applying for reallocated funds.  One goal of the requested grant money was to meet a fundamental need: providing shoes and socks to students.

This week, qualifying students from across the division were treated to a special shopping trip to Rack Room Shoes, where they had the chance to select shoes and socks for school. Thanks to the generosity of Rack Room Shoes, the store opened early, ensuring that the staff could dedicate their full attention to helping the students find the perfect footwear. On Thursday, they shifted the schedule due to an unexpected two-hour delay.  Even this did not stop them from ensuring that the students still had the opportunity to come.  The personalized service created a positive and fun atmosphere, making the trip more than just a shopping experience.

This isn’t the first time Rack Room Shoes has stepped up to support CCPS students. Last year, Rack Room donated shoes through their Shoes That Fit program, an initiative aimed at helping kids in need get the shoes they deserve. Their ongoing partnership has proven invaluable in ensuring that every child feels supported and ready for success. "Rack Room Shoes has been a great partner in helping meet the needs of our students," said Laura Hoover, CCPS Director of Communication and Grants. "During the visits, it was evident that the staff genuinely cared about our students. Their generosity and commitment to our kids’ well-being make a real difference in our community."

At Yowell Elementary School, Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Dugger accompanied five excited students on their mini field trip to Rack Room Shoes. Each student had the opportunity to choose footwear that reflected their unique personality and needs. Some went straight for colorful Crocs, loving the mix of comfort and style, while others gravitated towards sleek new sneakers. A few students even selected cozy fall boots in preparation for the cooler months ahead.

The Rack Room staff ensured that every student had a memorable shopping experience, helping them find just the right fit and style. The students left with smiles on their faces and bags filled with their choices of shoes and socks. This initiative, supported by ARP ESSER funds and Rack Room Shoes' exceptional customer service, highlights CCPS's commitment to addressing the needs of its students in meaningful ways.

"We’re grateful not only for the opportunity to support our students with grant funds but also for the outstanding partnership with Rack Room Shoes," said Russell Houck, CCPS Executive Director of Student Services.  "Their willingness to open early and give our students individual attention made the day truly special."

As CCPS continues to prioritize student well-being, these  grant funded initiatives, combined with community partnerships, will leave a lasting impact on students and their families.
