Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS) Special Education Department proudly hosted the 18th Annual Special Games on Friday, April 19, 2024. With the theme of "Breaking Barriers," the event welcomed approximately 300 remarkable student athletes hailing from schools across four counties, including Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, and Orange.

Under the dedicated leadership of Interim Director Jennifer Burriss, the Special Games shone as a beacon of inclusivity and camaraderie. CCPS Adapted Physical Education (PE) teacher Mike McCombs organized the event with Adapted PE teachers in the partner school divisions. In addition, Christy Edwards from the CCPS Special Education Department organized the logistics including t-shirts, food, and volunteers. Held at Blue Devil Stadium of Culpeper County High School (CCHS), the event was a testament to the community's steadfast support for its exceptional youth.

Despite the chilly temperature and the occasional raindrop, which attempted to dampen spirits, the resilience and enthusiasm of participants prevailed, illuminating the stadium with determination and joy. Beyond the athletic events on the track and field, the Special Games epitomized the spirit of unity and collaboration. Alongside teachers and volunteers from participating schools, additional volunteers included CCPS School Board Members and Central Office staff, who lent their support for parking, concessions, and field assistance throughout the festivities.

More than just a competition, the Special Games provided a platform for athletes with disabilities to showcase their prowess in a variety of track and field events. It served as an avenue for students to not only compete but also to forge lasting connections, bolster self-confidence, and foster a profound sense of belonging. Reflecting on the day's events, Culpeper Middle School student Abbagayle Hooper aptly captured the sentiment, declaring it "the best day ever!" Burriss added, “Special Games was a great day for CCPS. Barriers fell, spirits soared, and it was just a great day for all.”

Culpeper County Public Schools extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and supporters whose unwavering dedication made the 18th Annual Special Games an unforgettable celebration of inclusivity and sportsmanship.
