Susan Campbell and Karie Lane

Culpeper County Public Schools is undergoing strategic administrative shifts to better align with the evolving educational landscape and meet the requirements of Title III and the Virginia Literacy Act. The changes, approved by the School Board on January 29, 2024, are set to take effect on February 1, 2024.

In response to the demands of the Virginia Literacy Act, Susan Campbell, currently serving as the Literacy Curriculum Specialist, will assume the role of Director of K-12 Literacy. This shift aims to streamline efforts in promoting literacy across all grade levels, ensuring a comprehensive approach to literacy education. The Virginia Literacy Act, passed by the 2022 General Assembly, requires that every division develop a literacy plan, ensure the use of evidence-based literacy curriculum, staff enough reading specialists to support intervention needs, and provide professional development to support teachers, reading specialists, and principals.

Addressing the growing population of English Learners and aiming to enhance family engagement, Karie Lane will transition from her current position as Director of Elementary Instruction & Title Programs to Director of ESL and the Family Resource Center. This move reflects the school district's commitment to inclusivity and providing targeted support to students and families with diverse linguistic backgrounds.

"These administrative changes are a strategic response to the evolving needs of our student population and the educational landscape. By realigning key roles, we are better positioned to meet the demands of the Virginia Literacy Act and provide enhanced support to English Learners and their families," stated Dr. Tony Brads, Superintendent of Culpeper County Public Schools.

The School Board's approval of these position changes signifies the school division’s dedication to adapting and optimizing its resources for the benefit of students and their families. The adjustments are anticipated to contribute to a more dynamic and effective educational environment within Culpeper County Public Schools.
