Welcome to our space! Mrs. Houston's class has been hard at work learning about polygons. To close out our polygon unit and to review fractions on a number line, students created their own piece of outer space. They then worked to solve math word problems on the theme of outer space. Mrs. Zajkowski’s class has transformed into Hogwarts School to prepare for the upcoming SOL tests. On Friday, the students were sorted into their houses. Yesterday, the students ate Harry Potter themed snacks, earned (and lost) points for their houses, and worked together as a team to review science, math, and reading. During the second week of March, Sketch Club was introduced to the work of Dutch sketchbook artist Koosje Koene. The students watched a tour of her accordion-style sketchbook filled with drawings and stories about her shoes! They had a great discussion about how all artwork goes through a weird stage where it might look really bad , and the voice in your head tells you it's awful! But the lesson is to just keep drawing and give your artwork a chance to work itself out. Then they took off their shoes and got to drawing!

Our stallions had the amazing opportunity to be visited by two members of the Charlottesville Symphony! 4th and 5th grade students were able to watch demonstrations by a principal viola player and a principal clarinet player from the symphony. They enjoyed hearing songs from Star Wars, Harry Potter, the Pink Panther, and more! This was made possible by The Francis J. Sheridan Fund, The Richard M. and Tessa G. Ader Fund for Music Education, and The Charlottesville Symphony Society.

Our school counselor, Mrs. Gibson, is working with small groups of students. Small group counseling teaches skills and strategies that enhance a student’s ability to succeed academically and socially. 5th grade students are preparing for middle school by learning what type of learner they are so that they can maximize their ability to retain information and achieve better learning outcomes. 1st and 3rd grades are learning the aspects of healthy friendships, expanding social circles, and building their conflict resolution skills.
