Ms. Fabris’ class has been working on the scientific method in science. They have been learning all about making a hypothesis, differentiating between variables and constants, and finding conclusions. Miss Mahokey's class works hard each day to earn handfuls of marbles to fill their class marble jar. When they fill the jar, they earn a whole class reward! Last week their reward was to spend some time with Mrs. Dugger in the STEM lab! They got to show off their knowledge of the scientific method and work collaboratively to stack cups using only string and rubber bands! They had so much fun! Thanks Mrs. Dugger for helping to reward some awesome Stallions!

Students have been learning about book care in the library before their first library book checkout. Ms. Zuna showed the students the "Book Hospital" where damaged books go that can't be repaired. Some of the damaged books that the students saw have mold from water, spilled milk, syrup spills, chewed pages, and many books with crayon, pen, and scissor cut pages and rips from younger siblings. Ms Zuna taught students to keep water bottles in a side pocket outside of their backpacks to prevent spills. They discussed keeping books in a safe place at home like a bookshelf, or backpack. They discussed the importance of one of our Yowell school rules, "being responsible" , and taking care of our things. Before checking out their first book, all students say, "the book care pledge," promising to do their best to take care of their books. If there is a "book accident", students are encouraged to bring it to the library for repair, if possible. We are looking forward to checking out and reading many wonderful books this year!!

Mrs. Settle and her students have been spending a lot of time building up a positive classroom community to help make sure that school is a place they're happy to be at. They are really focusing on celebrating both the things that make us similar and different to our peers. Some students enjoy building new STEM bin creations together. Others enjoy collaborating with their classmates, each using their own strengths as authors or illustrators to make a new book. Some enjoy dancing to the music on the Friday announcements! Whether it’s during free time, math, or reading, they're learning lots and having fun while doing it!

Mrs. Yost's class has started the year off great! In science they started by studying scientific investigations. First they collaborated by "saving Fred" with a simple experiment, and then went a little deeper with an experiment discovering which solution cleans a penny best! They've also spent time building relationships and creating a class family.

Today, our second-grade class visited Luck Stone Quarry to see real dinosaur footprints. We were thrilled to explore the quarry and find ancient tracks left by these incredible creatures. The students were fascinated by the size and shape of the footprints, which gave them a glimpse into life millions of years ago.

A huge thank you to Dick's Sporting Goods for awarding Yowell Elementary School a generous $5,000 grant to purchase new gymnastics equipment, marking a significant boost to our physical education program. The grant will enable us to acquire more top-quality mats, beams, and other essential equipment, enhancing the safety and experience for students participating in gymnastics. This investment not only supports the development of students' physical skills but also fosters a love for fitness and athletics at a young age.

After reading "A Squiggly Story," a classmate brought in her own book she made at home. Mrs. Malone's class was inspired to create their own stories! They each made a book, complete with a front cover, letters, pictures, and of course, some squiggles! Students then got to read their stories to the class :)

This week, Mrs.Gibson, our school counselor, is introducing herself and explaining her role using Mrs.Potato Head to our first grade students. Mrs. Gibson uses her HANDS for high-fives, waves, and holding your hand if you need a friend. Mrs. Gibson uses her MOUTH to smile at you and talk with you. Mrs. Gibson uses her EARS to listen to you. That's a big part of what she does! Mrs. Gibson uses her EYES to help you see things in a new way. And she has a BAG of tools to help you solve problems or deal with big feelings. She is excited for a great year!!!

Mrs. Kearney's 2nd and 3rd graders are using fun tools to become better, faster, stronger readers and spellers! Some of our 2nd graders are using magnetic boards to build words and others are using sand boxes to write our letters. In 3rd grade, some of us are using magnetic wands and word mapping tools to build words while others are using word find sheets to find digraphs like "CH". Digraphs are two letters that come together to form one sound. What a fun start to the year!

This week our Pre-K students are learning all about rules. Today they learned what rules are and why we have rules. They were learning the Listening Rules during SEL time, reading a story called Listening Time, and playing Simon Says to practice following rules. Later this week they will work together to use pictures to develop their classroom rules , and they will sort pictures onto their Green and Red Choice charts to help them remember ways to follow rules at school vs. breaking them. They are also working hard to follow rules and earn 10 stars in their Star Jar for their first trip to their classroom Treasure Box!

This picture shows the text that our pre-k students came up with to share what they know about rules: What are rules? They can be broken. It's like breaking the law. Rules are things we need to do, follow or listen to. Why do we have rules? We want everyone to be safe and calm. Not hitting is being nice and kind. Rules help us to be good.
