Dick's Sporting Goods recently awarded Yowell Elementary School with a generous $5,000 grant. The grant is being used to maintain our before-school sports club, provide recreational sports fees and equipment to homeless students, and purchase new gymnastics equipment to be used in Physical Education (PE) classes. Principal Angie Fiscus, worked with PE teacher Jennifer Houck to meaningfully use the grant to benefit the physical health of Yowell students. Coming off a memorable Summer Olympics where United States men's and women's gymnastics shined, Yowell is planning to grow their gymnastic unit in PE classes with the addition of new gymnastics equipment. Gymnastics is a very popular PE unit each year and the addition of a new apparatus it will make it even more popular!
In addition to the added gymnastics equipment, grant fundss will be used for the school's sports club. Yowell's sports club, sponsored by Houck and Chris Harris, meets twice each week before school for third through fifth grade students. This sports club provides students with the opportunity to put into practice the skills they are learning in PE by engaging in games on teams such as football, volleyball and tennis. Another highly enjoyable sports club activity is fort building. The students utilize the woods on the backside of the property to work with friends to build forts. Allowing students to play outside and collaborate with peers is exactly what Yowell’s sports club is all about.
Lastly, Yowell is using this grant to help homeless students by paying for recreational sports fees and necessary equipment to play the sport. Providing youth sports to our neediest students is the highlight of the Dick's Sporting Goods grant. This investment helps to support the development of students' physical skills by fostering a love for fitness and athletics at a young age.
Thank you Dick’s Sporting Goods for this generous donation.
