The Culpeper County School Board approved the school calendars for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years during their meeting on Monday, January 13, 2025. This decision followed the first reading of the proposed calendars, which took place on December 9, 2024.
The new calendars are closely aligned with the current school calendar and include several key features. These include a “Meet the Teacher” Day on the first Monday in August, and the first day of school scheduled for the first Wednesday in August. The early start allows for the completion of the first semester prior to winter break, which is a benefit to instruction, especially at the secondary level.
Additionally, both calendars feature a four-day weekend for Labor Day, Election Day as a student holiday, three days off for Thanksgiving and Martin Luther King Jr. Day observed as a holiday.
A notable change in the new calendars is the addition of Presidents Day as a holiday in February 2026 and February 2027. Graduation for both high schools will be held at 9am on Saturday, May 16, 2026, and Saturday, May 15, 2027.
“Developing a school calendar is a complex process,” said Executive Director of Student Services Russell Houck. “We have to balance the 180 days of instruction required by the state with the needs of our students, staff, and families. These calendars aim to provide consistency while making thoughtful adjustments to better serve our community.”
