Billy Mitchell - CMS: In the “Hero’s Journey,” the hero leaves on an adventure, sees the world, learns some hard truths, then brings that knowledge back to the people. As an English teacher, this is a concept William “Billy” Mitchell has not only taught for over two decades at Culpeper Middle School, it’s a path he’s been on himself. The son of an educator and a banker, Billy grew up in Madison County. He graduated from JMU as a poly-sci major then returned to JMU to become an educator. Upon receiving his license, he was hired by Culpeper to teach at CMS. In true hero fashion; however, Billy’s been more than just an exemplary educator in the classroom. He’s been the English Department chair, where he’s mentored other educators. He’s been heavily involved in developing and promoting the sports programs at CMS and CCHS as an announcer, timekeeper, athletic director, and coach. His passion for sports has also enabled him to volunteer his time on the Board of Directors for the Culpeper Cavaliers Baseball team and mentor young people with Kid Central and Empowering Culpeper. If Billy’s not in the classroom, coaching on the golf course, or working on a sports field, he can be found reading, writing, cheering on one of his favorite sports teams, or playing his guitar. Yes, Billy Mitchell may have left the Piedmont once, but he returned to educate and empower others, which is why so many of us at CMS have the privilege of calling him our hero. Congratulations on being named the Culpeper Middle School Teacher of the Year!
