Culpeper County High School (CCHS) proudly partnered with the Carver 4 County Museum to host a George Washington Carver Regional High School Alumni Night on January 28, 2025. This special evening brought together generations of alumni, students, and community members to celebrate Carver’s lasting impact on Culpeper and the surrounding counties.

The event began with a meet and greet reception in the CCHS library, where 20 Carver alumni were welcomed by student volunteers Xavier Williams, Kayden Ford, Eden Boss, and Arianna Lambert. The students adorned the honored guests with corsages handcrafted by CCHS agriculture students under the guidance of Ms. Laura DeLano. Throughout the evening, historical videos provided by the Carver 4 County Museum played in the library and on screens throughout the school, offering a glimpse into Carver’s history and the experiences of its students.

After the reception, the alumni enjoyed an exciting varsity basketball doubleheader against Spotsylvania High School, with the CCHS teams donning Carver replica uniforms in tribute to the historic school. Both home teams secured victories, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Between the games, Carver alumni were honored at center court, receiving a standing ovation as they were individually introduced. Special recognition was given to members of the 1963 Carver State Championship football team, a group whose achievements remain a point of pride for the Carver community. CCHS Athletic Director Danny Nobbs unveiled a framed photo of the state championship team, which will now hang permanently at CCHS, ensuring that current and future students understand the legacy of the Carver Hawks.

“This event is more than just a celebration—it’s a way to honor history, share stories, and strengthen our community,” said CCHS Principal Danny Soderholm. “Events like this allow us to hear firsthand about the experiences and contributions of the Carver alumni.”

On behalf of the Carver Alumni Association and the Carver 4 County Museum, Hortense Hinton-Jackson, President of the Carver 4 County Museum Board, expressed deep appreciation for the event, “My response, on behalf of Carver’s Alumni Association and the Carver 4 County Museum, is one of gratitude and appreciation, “ she said. “A special thank you to Ryan Hoffman, Japreshia Clark, Mister Jennings, and all sponsors for remembering and celebrating Carver’s alumni athletes and our outstanding sports teams. It was a very unique idea, and it was enjoyed by all the alumni who attended. We also appreciate Principal Soderholm, the CCHS teams, and student volunteers who helped make it happen.”

Culpeper County High School has a deep connection to Carver, with its basketball coaches carrying on the legacy. Girls' basketball coach Corey Hutcherson is the son of two Carver alumni, including his father, Lawrence Hutcherson, a three-sport athlete and a member of the 1963 State Championship football team. Boys' basketball coach Keith “Mister” Jennings is the son of Kenneth “Foots” Jennings, a former Carver basketball player who has dedicated decades to coaching and refereeing youth sports in Culpeper. Their stories reflect the resilience and dedication of Carver graduates, many of whom have continued to serve and uplift the community.

George Washington Carver Regional High School operated from 1948 to 1968, serving Black students from Culpeper, Orange, Madison, and Rappahannock counties during segregation. The Carver 4 County Museum works to preserve the school’s history and the stories of its students.

CCHS is proud to honor Carver’s legacy and looks forward to future opportunities to celebrate this important chapter in local history.  For those who would like to learn more, Hinton-Jackon extended an invitation, “We invite you to visit our museum and learn more about Carver Regional High School."
